Rock for Autism
Event on 2012-08-11 12:00:00
Pediatric Sensory Therapy presents the first annual Rock for Autism benefit concert and silent auction for the Children’s Occupational Therapy Charitable Trust.
This event is being held on Saturday August 11, 2012 from 12-4pm in St. Johns at the Cathedral Park Place Building Courtyard. Cathedral Park Place Courtyard is located at 6635 N Baltimore Avenue Portland, OR 97203. The concert will kick off with music at noon and end around 4pm. Admission is free. Donations are accepted. Music is being donated by Portland local bands: the Lucy Hammond Band, Ramble On and Butterfly Breakdown. The silent auction will feature items donated by local Portland artists and local Portland businesses. Cathedral Park Kitchen will be offering a great menu and Occidental Brewing will be opening their doors with a beer garden so you can enjoy food and beverage while watching the bands! Each will be donating a portion of their sales to the charity! All proceeds will be given to the Children’s Occupational Therapy Charitable Trust so that scholarships may be awarded to Portland area families of children with autism.
Children’s Occupational Therapy Charitable Trust:
The mission of the Children's Occupational Therapy Charitable Trust is to help children access the healthcare they otherwise would not have by providing therapy scholarships. Scholarships are awarded to Portland areas families of children on the autism spectrum who are uninsured, under-insured or low income, and are unable to provide therapy services for their children on their own. This charity was established in 2006 and is a registered domestic nonprofit corporation. Pediatric Sensory Therapy has committed to hosting an annual fundraiser to raise awareness and funding for the organization. Autism is on the rise, up 78% since 2007 says the CDC, and costs are too. That's 1 in 88 children being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, or 1 in 54 for boys. Occupational Therapy was identified by the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) in 2012 as the number three treatment used by families after prescription medications and speech therapy. The problem is that the IAN also found that 72% of families are required to pay 0-0 out of pocket per month, or their children cannot receive therapy services. 24% of families are quitting their jobs or reducing hours to be able to take their child to therapy or do treatment at home, thus increasing the financial burden on the family. Families simply cannot afford to pay out of pocket; hence children are going without therapy.
Occupational Therapy is Important:
The overall goal for occupational therapy is to help the person with autism improve his or her quality of life. The therapist helps to facilitate the acquisition of new skills creating independence. If children do not receive this effective therapy, they will likely not reach their fullest potential or be as successful into adulthood. Children on the spectrum are going without this therapy, and it is very concerning because they are not given the opportunity to grow and develop with the help of an occupational therapist. Starting therapy early is the best method for increasing positive outcomes.
Fundraising Goal:
The goal for this event is to raise enough funding to provide ten Portland area families of children on the autism spectrum with a three month scholarship for weekly therapy. Ten scholarships for weekly therapy is about ,000. Come support out cause and enjoy fun, food and music!
